Ballet Black celebrates 20 years… returning to Barbican from 24th March with brand new programme

BB are returning to the Barbican from the 24th of March with a brand new programme to mark twenty years of Ballet Black, presenting Black Sun by acclaimed South African choreographer Gregory Maqoma (Vuyani Dance Theatre, Ballet Black’s EightfoldHope) featuring an original score by Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante (co-Artistic Director of Boy Blue) a new work that draws energy from the sun and the moon giving rise to descendants of ancestors. These forces only meet to blacken, allowing us to draw from their powers as we prepare for life after life.

The second ballet in this double bill, Say It Loud, is Founder Cassa’s first piece for BB in twenty years. She worked together with the Company dancers to create a ballet about Ballet Black: the early days, who are they now and why Ballet Black exists. It’s a piece that’s very personal to the Company and her, and their twentieth birthday and she felt like it was the right occasion to create a work like this. It is set to a fabulous soundtrack of music from Steve Reich, Flowdan, Etta James and Jon Batiste – please join BB to celebrate this milestone in their history!
