The show opens with Chaka Khan (Alexandra Burke) in family therapy, attempting to analyse and come to terms with the roots of her trauma. From there, we are taken on a powerful journey through her extraordinary life. Her externalised inner monologue, Marie Stevens (Chessie Bhima), embodies Chaka’s self-doubt, constantly pulling her back towards addiction while amplifying the emotional scars left by the abuse she endured from some of the men in her life from an early age.
The turning point comes through her daughter, Milini Khan (Charlotte St. Croix), and Chaka’s growing determination to reclaim her identity, strength and sense of self. Choosing truth, reflection and ultimately the high road, she makes the courageous decision to enter rehab and begin rebuilding her life.
This beautifully crafted production explores every facet of Chaka’s journey. It uplifts as much as it educates, weaving in references to her involvement with the Black Panthers, her relationships with Joni Mitchell (Sophie Earl) and Prince (Miles Anthony Daley), and the unwavering support of her family, whose love and encouragement helped sustain both her spirit and her remarkable career as she battled her demons.
Ultimately, Chaka was simply being every woman. The musical peels back the layers of a true icon, with sensational vocals, a compelling script, assured direction and outstanding musical arrangements. Together, the cast and creative team have created a fresh and distinctive production that not only entertains with some of Chaka’s greatest anthems but also leaves audiences feeling inspired and empowered.
More than a celebration of an extraordinary career, I’m Every Woman is a story of survival, courage and inner strength. It honours an inspirational woman whose journey resonates far beyond the stage and serves as a poignant reminder of the power of hope, healing and self-discovery.
