Last day to catch Bianca Saunders at London Showrooms Milan.
The 26 year old designer joins the likes of Grace Wales Bonner and Martine Rose, three women of colour in the fashion industry who are on top of their game changing the face of an industry where diversity is lacking.
Saunder graduated in 2017 from the Royal College of Art, very quickly she court the attention of the British Fashion Council, as one to watch, making her fashion week debut at SS19 LFWM shows. Her menswear label is an exploration of surrounding identities and draws heavily on Bianca’s background growing up in London with West-Indian heritage.
Autumn-Winter 2018 collection, titled Personal Politics was presented at Pitti Uomo and focused on black male identities and challenging stereotypes of hyper masculinity.
Her Spring-Summer 2019 collection, titled Gestures, was showcased at London Fashion Week Men’s, as part of the covetable #NEWGEN: One To Watch sponsorship scheme. The offering focused on body language and mannerisms, as observed in research films made by the designer.
She has also collaborated with filmmakers like Akinola Davies and fellow D100er Joshua Woods; allowing a look behind-the-scenes at what inspires her through short films
Her Autumn-Winter 2019 collection explored themes surrounding the black male identity in the expanse of their most intimate setting, within their bedroom. This latest offering, ‘Unravelling’ is conceptualised through the reflection of male figures in their most wholesome state and where they feel most open to self-expression.
Focusing intensely on twisted seams, shirring, elasticated techniques to create a bounce back effect and mesh detailing, there are subtle elements of sexiness present within the collection. Drawing on the black male experience from close allies, research and challenging the norms surrounding hyper masculinity, Saunders delves into a world where the lines between femininity and vulnerability are blurred.
