CasildART Contemporary is pleased to present ‘Tethered: Where the Line Holds’, a powerful new solo exhibition by emerging British–Ugandan artist Sarah Muwanga. Exploring grounded presence, quiet resistance and the resilience required to hold one’s place in a shifting world, the exhibition runs from 26 June to 11 July 2026 at CasildART Contemporary, 32 Connaught Street, London W2.

“This exhibition explores the relationship between grounding and freedom. For me, the line is both a boundary and a source of strength — something that holds, protects and defines. These works emerged from a period of reflection on what it means to stand firmly within yourself, to occupy space with clarity, and to remain present despite external pressures. They are ultimately about resilience, self-possession and the quiet power of staying connected to who you are.”
Featuring a compelling new body of work, including two paintings created exclusively for the exhibition, Muwanga deepens her exploration of the figure as a site of grounding, belonging and quiet strength. Her paintings present figures that occupy space with assurance and dignity, embodying a subtle yet unmistakable authority.
The exhibition title operates in dual motion. Tethered speaks both to anchoring and to the unseen constraints that shape how presence is negotiated. While her figures stand firmly within themselves, the title also gestures towards the pressures, dependencies and tensions that accompany acts of self-definition.
Where the Line Holds extends this enquiry through Muwanga’s visual language. The line becomes both boundary and declaration: an insistent mark that refuses to yield. It suggests the labour of maintaining selfhood, the discipline of staying grounded, and the resilience required to remain present amid uncertainty. Together, the two phrases articulate a practice concerned with the quiet power of holding one’s ground.

Sarah Muwanga is an emerging British–Ugandan artist whose practice centres the figure as a site of identity, grounding and emotional resonance. Working primarily in painting, she explores how bodies occupy space, negotiate pressure and express selfhood through gesture, posture and presence.
Her work has attracted growing attention from collectors and curators for its distinctive visual language, psychological depth and nuanced exploration of belonging and becoming. Tethered: Where the Line Holds marks a significant milestone in her career, presenting her most ambitious and cohesive body of work to date.
CasildART Contemporary is a Black women-led gallery dedicated to championing artists of African and Caribbean descent. Rooted in lineage, legacy and community, the gallery creates space for Black creativity, excellence and self-actualisation through contemporary visual art.
Named after founder Sukai Eccleston’s great-grandmother, Casilda – whose name means “dwelling place” – CasildART is conceived as a home for diasporic artists: a place where stories are nurtured, celebrated and seen.
