Virginia Leonard, Since you have been gone, I can do whatever I want
Taste Contemporary is proud to present GO | BETWEEN: a two-person exhibition featuring the work of painter Marcello Barceló and ceramic artist Virginia Leonard. The exhibition runs at Cromwell Place, London from 10th to 15th October 2023.

The title of the exhibition:GO | BETWEEN, refers to each artist appearing to find inspiration in spaces between very different worlds, but through contrasting means. Spanish born Marcella Barceló’swork invites us to inhabit a mysterious world, to join her in a personal exploration throughimagesthat feel strangely familiar, almost classically referential in composition, butare, at the same time, fresh, youthful, and alive in composure and character. New Zealand artist,
Virginia Leonard has described clay as a proxy for her own body and the white cube of the exhibition space a proxy for themedical spaces in which she has spent so much time.

The paintings of Marcella Barceló contain an autobiographical dimension; outdoor scenes recallmemories of her childhood that included hot summers spent on the island of Majorca. Influenced byBalthus, Lewis Carroll, Nabokov and Laura Kasischke, adisturbing metaphorical strangenessemerges from her work. Crossed by the recurring figures of ghostly adolescents, it seems to hesitatebetween wonder and pain.

Marcella’s work has been included in many prestigious exhibitions andcollections. In 2014, she participated in the Biennale de Dessin Contemporain de Paris and infollowing year, she was awarded the Prix du Dessin Contemporain of the Beaux-Arts de Paris.Addressing issues of personal trauma, injury and chronic pain, Virginia Leonard uses her material tobuild largescale, highly emotive and powerful sculptural objects. She uses glazes of pinks, white andreds, vibrant blues, yellows and golds that emulate the oozing and deformations that play a part ina body’s journey through illness and recovery.

Her work has been acquired by a number of publiccollections including the Art Gallery of South Australia; the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australiaand Musée Ariana, Geneva. The supporting programme featuresa reading by poet and writerCarmen Campo Real who has beencommissioned to write a personal response to a work of Virginia Leonard.Exhibitors: Marcella Barceló, Spain, b. 1992 and Virginia Leonard, New Zealand b. 1965 Venue: 4 Cromwell Place,Gallery 12, London, SW7 2JE, UK Dates:10th to 15th October 2023.Open:Tuesday, members day; Wednesday to Saturday 10:00-18:00; Sunday 10:00-16:00
