British rapper Skepta debuts his first painting and guest curates Sotheby’s auction: bids close 13 Sept

He is one of UK’s most prominent grime musicians and producers, now he add artist and curator to his resume.
The award-winning British-Nigerian performer guest curates a section of the upcoming “Contemporary Curated” sale, Sotheby’s initiative which has seen famous figures like Oprah and the late Virgil Abloh — take up play role of a co-curator.
Featuring works from both emerging and established artists this years it includes a painting by Skepta’s himself.

He describes the works as “Mama Goes to Market,” as a “brought-together memory of Nigeria,”, It is his first painting and was created during a Covid-19 lockdown in 2020.

The present work was originally painted in 2020, by the British rapper, songwriter and record producer Skepta. He then took the painting to the graphic artist Chito’s collaboration with Givenchy, where people could bring any item to be transformed with Chito’s signature tag. Seen on the walls of Skepta’s painting alongside tags by the graphic artist Slawn and the producer and DJ Goldie, Mama goes to market becomes a focal point for artistic collaboration.
