The BBC and Shakespeare’s Globe have teamed up to celebrate the Globe’s 25th Anniversary, broadcasting three films on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer. The productions span across the years with Michelle Terry in Twelfth Night (2021), Emma Rice’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2016) and Gemma Arterton in The Duchess of Malfi (2014). These broadcasts form part of BBC Four’s new Sunday Night Performances showcasing some of the best of the UK’s dance, theatre, music and spoken word in specially made films for television every week of the year.
Shakespeare’s comedy of mistaken identity, music and the madness of love, Twelfth Night (2021), was directed by Globe Associate Artistic Director Sean Holmes and is infused with the mesmeric nostalgia and soulful music of the world of Americana. Artistic Director Michelle Terry plays Viola.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2016) was Emma Rice’s first production as Artistic Director. The critically acclaimed show is naughty, tender, transgressive and surprising, it promises to be a festival of theatre. The production streamed live in September 2016, and features NcutiGatwa, Anjana Vasan, and Meow Meow.
John Webster’s revenge tragedy, The Duchess of Malfi (2014), was directed by then Artistic
Director Dominic Dromgoole.The production was the inaugural performance at the newly built Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. It is lit entirely by candlelight, evoking a sinister world of plotting and intrigue. Gemma Arterton takes the title role.
The first BBC Four broadcast will be in Spring, with all further TX dates to be announced.
Upcoming in the summer season, BBC family favourite CBeebies will be live on stage on 9 and
10 August with a special adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It. This unique Shakespearean production with a CBeebies twist will feature many of the most popular actors and presenters, performed especially for pre-school children and their families. Tickets from £5 go on-sale at 12 noon on 20 April with four performances 11am and 2pm on both days filmed in front of a live audience. The show will be available on CBeebies and on BBC iPlayer over Easter 2023. It will broadcast in cinemas nationwide in April 2023.
Ticketing Information for Families
Tickets for this production are £35 and £20 for seated tickets and £5 for standing tickets.
The performance is suitable for children aged 3 years upwards. 24 months and under (babes in arms) and under are welcome to attend and ‘go free on knees’ but will require a free babes-in-arms ticket too. Standing tickets in the yard are a unique part of the Globe experience. For safety reasons, audience members in the yard cannot sit on the floor at any time and chairs, shooting sticks, buggies and carriers are not permitted. Umbrellas are also not permitted so please dress for the weather.

Background Information
Shakespeare’s Globe strives to make Shakespeare accessible for all. It is a registered charity and has operated independently since opening in 1997. The theatre closed on 18 March 2020, reopening 19 May 2021.
Continued restrictions and the delay of not being able to open at the beginning of the year has created a deficit of £2.5m for the current financial year. Alongside the support from the Cultural Recovery Fund and furloughing staff, the Globe still lost just under £4m last year. The Globe plans to recoup costs from next year. The vital Cultural Recovery Fund, incredible generosity of sponsors, donors, and the public has allowed the Globe to reopen and start to recoup the devastating impact of the pandemic.
The Shakespeare’s Globe site comprises: The Globe Theatre (1997): unique full-scale replica of
Shakespeare’s original 1599 Elizabethan open-air theatre; Education and Rehearsal Centre (2010); Indoor candle-lit Jacobean Sam Wanamaker Playhouse (2014); Library, archive, lecture theatre and other public spaces. In addition to performances in our London theatres and touring productions nationally and internationally, we also educate through Shakespeare in performance. Working over 139,000 students each year, giving over £2 million in free tickets to schoolchildren, we are the only performing arts organisation in the world with an in-house faculty of academics who lead on original research into
Shakespeare in performance and stage global social justice-themed festivals. Talent development is a key objective and since 2015, our new writing commissions have been nominated for ten Olivier Awards.
