October Gallery, 24 Old Gloucester Street, London WC1N 3AL (Until 25 MAY)
Celebrating its 40th anniversary, The October Gallery will be exhibiting the works of some of the Gallery’s major artists, such as El Anatsui, William S. Burroughs, Paul Friedlander, Brion Gysin, Jukhee Kwon, Romuald Hazoumè, Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga, LR Vandy, Gerald Wilde, Aubrey Williams and Kenji Yoshida. LR Vandy told Alt A:
‘’The Hull series transforms model boat hulls into ‘masks’, I animate the hulls with objects such as fishing floats, porcupine quills and acupuncture needles. The hulls allude to the transportation of migrants as commodities. As masks they present a transformation of identity, drawing upon the tradition of talismans, charms and amulets. My work unearths the underbelly of transport systems and their hidden human costs.‘’
