’50 Best Cities in the World 2024’ list was compiled by the renowned guide, including the largest city in Brazil
Voted one of the top 20 cities in the world, according to Time Out, São Paulo turns 470-year old this Thursday, 25th January. The largest city in Brazil appears on the 16th place on the ’50 Best Cities in the World 2024’ ranking compiled by the renowned guide, which interviewed over 20,000 city-dwellers globally and combined the results with the insight of Time Out’s editors and writers.
Hot spot to eat:
São Paulo was ahead of cities like Los Angeles (17th place) and Amsterdam (18th place), and was the only Brazilian city to make it to the ranking. The criteria used for the study was the quality and affordability of food, culture, and nightlife.

New York came up in first place on the list, followed by Cape Town (South Africa), Berlin (Germany), London (England), and Madrid (Spain) on the top 5.
Art scene
Known by the locals as ‘Sampa’, São Paulo breathes art and culture with loads of museums to explore. From MASP, the Sao Paulo Museum of Modern Art, to the Museu da Língua Portuguesa which celebrates the Portuguese language, there is much to see and enjoy. Gastronomy
According to Ana Paula Jacques, coordinator of culture and gastronomy at the Brazilian Tourism Board (Visit Brasil/Embratur), approximately 6% of the population is dedicated to food services. “The city breathes gastronomy throughout the day. With over 12,500 restaurants in operation, the local gastronomic scene is impressive, consolidating the destination’s prominence among foodies worldwide, including having the fourth-best restaurant on the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants list, ‘A Casa do Porco'”, she emphasizes. Jacques points out that with bars, pubs and street food, São Paulo stands out not only for the numbers but, above all, for gastronomic quality.
Connected to the World
With one of the most important airports in the region, São Paulo is connected to the world. In the first four months of 2024, approximately 3.7 million seats on 14,500 flights are expected to connect 26 countries from Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, North America, and Central America to the city. Thirty-one airlines transport international tourists through Guarulhos International Airport in the period.
São Paulo’s 470th anniversary
To celebrate São Paulo’s 470th anniversary, the city’s tourism board selected 470 tips and curiosities about the capital of São Paulo. The idea is to ensure that residents and visitors can enjoy everything that São Paulo has to offer and motivate them to explore the city throughout the year and not just on the official date.
