I wanted to document how people use Wanstead Flats through the seasons, and met Kenneatha and Keziah at the fair in summer. Keziah had wanted them to dress alike and spend some mother-and-daughter time together.
Portrait of Britain returns with the winning images selected by a panel of jurors compiled from professionals in the photography industry. Designed to illustrate the diversity of life in modern Britain, the award invites us to reflect on the multiplicity of voices and stories across the country, forming a powerful contemporary portrait of British life.

Of Nigerian descent, Natalie grew up in England but fully embraces her cultural heritage. This is part of a project that explores the use of Ankara, the African printed textile, in fashion design, highlighting the emergence of African fashion across the globe.
The 99 winning portraits will be exhibited in a month-long digital exhibition in partnership with JCDecaux, alongside a hardback book featuring the 200 shortlisted images – to be announced this Thursday (12th January) – published by Hoxton Mini Press.

Black women are constantly pushed out of societal norms when it comes to beauty standards. Whiteness is often seen as the norm. By placing this beautiful model in a beauty pageant setting (traditionally a white domain), wearing her hair as her crown, I created my own rules.

The images can be seen on JCDecaux’s digital screens on highstreets and on bus shelters, in shopping malls and in train stations UK-wide including major hubs such as London King’s Cross, London Liverpool Street, London St. Pancras and London Victoria as well as Birmingham New Street, Glasgow central, Edinburgh Waverley, Leeds, Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Piccadilly among others.
