When do cinemas open in the UK? ..and 2021 release dates Dune, Respect, Bond and more

Outdoor cinemas are already open but indoor cinema venues will see a stagged opening from Monday, 17th May as some cinemas are working towards their own schedule to get back to screenings. Here are the date as of 7 May subject to change with government guidelines. (main images Dune Sharon Duncan-Brewster)

No confirmed date for Odeon but it looks like it will be 21st May based on the films they have listed on the website.

Showcase Cinemas – 17th May

Showcase Cinema chain will also be reopening on the government guidance date, 17th May.

Vue – TBC

Vue is yet to announce its reopen date. Vue’s website has more details.

Curzon – 17th May

Curzon is set to open on 17th May. Mayfair, Richmond, Wimbledon and Sheffield will open 4th June. Tickets on sale 10th May.

Independent cinemas?

Unlike the large cinema chains with a stronger financial framework independent cinemas have been hit a lot harder.

Best to check your local cinema website for reopening dates.

What safety measures will be in place at cinemas?

The UK Cinema Association published a document in 2020 containing guidance on the best way to reopen venues during the pandemic, titled Cinemas: Keeping Workers and Customers Safe during COVID-19.

The guidance across all cinemas is:

  • Staggered start times
  • Reduced ticketing
  • Face masks
  • Book online (no cash)
  • All pre-packaged food and drink
  • Regular cleaning
