Located in Turkey’s South-eastern province of Batman, Hasankefy Museum houses artifacts from the beginning of civilization. With its most recent piece dating back to 1473, the museum displays artifacts from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze, Iron and Middle Ages as well as the Roman, Artuqid and Ottoman periods, which were collected from five different cities, including Batman, Mardin, Siirt, Şırnak and Diyarbakır.
Spanning over a total period of 12 thousand 500 years, the artifacts are displayed in chronological order. The museum also allows visitors to experience living in the past with its visual animations and presents a wax sculpture exhibition of cave life by the Tigris River.
The museum, which provides an extraordinary experience to its visitors by allowing them to travel back in time, features a cafeteria, foyer, library and children’s education workshop. The area also serves as an open-air museum, offering opportunities such as walking around the Arkeopark Cultural Area, National Garden, Şap Valley and the ancient Mint, as well as boat tours for viewing the underwater Hasankeyf structures. Currently, excavations to unearth 3000 caves from the Hellenistic period are ongoing and are expected to be open for visitors in the future.
