Ealing Council officially approves proposal that Havelock Road in London’s Southall district will be renamed Guru Nanak Road. Guru Nanak is the founder of Sikhism and is the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. Havelock Road was named after Major General Sir Henry Havelock KCB, the colonial British general who fought in the Sikh wars and later suppressed the 1857 Uprising. Havelock Road is home to London’s largest gurdwara, a place of worship and assembly for the Sikh communities.
