BFI: Andrew Dosunmu’s Restless City

Andrew Dosunmu’s feature debut delves into the fringes of New York’s thriving pan-African community. Djbril, a West African immigrant, hopes to make it as a musician, but his dreams are thwarted by the harsh realities of urban life and star-crossed love with a local sex worker. Acclaimed cinematographer Bradford Young (Arrival, Selma) – a founding father of contemporary Black aesthetics – adds a touch of magic to this rich study of complex community dynamics.
