The Photographers Gallery: DPP Event: Lynsey Addario in conversation with Thomas Dworzak

This event is part of The Death Penalty Project Lecture Series, exploring issues of photography and human rights, in conjunction with Roman Vishniac: Rediscovered.

Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Lynsey Addario is joined in conversation with Thomas Dworzak, photographer and President of Magnum Photos. Documenting current international affairs, conflict and migration, these two leading contemporary photojournalists’ work testify to the power photography to tell people’s stories and how images are able to raise awareness and support of relief efforts as well as question political regimes.

The discussion is chaired by Julian Stallabrass, Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Courtauld Institute of Art.

#LynseyAddario is an American photojournalist who regularly works for The New York Times, National Geographic, and Time Magazine. Addario has been the recipient of numerous international awards throughout her career, and in 2015, American Photo Magazine named Lynsey one of the five most influential photographers of the past 25 years. Of Love & War, a book of photography by Lynsey Addario is released by Penguin Press on 23 October.

#ThomasDworzak became a Magnum nominee in 2000 and a full member in 2004. Following the 9/11 attacks, he spent time covering the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as their impact on the US and as a TIME contract photographer he has covered major international stories. Covering The heightened migration crisis in Europe since 2015 lead him to initiate the “Europa” guide for refugees, which was produced and distributed free of charge to migrants.

Julian Stallabrass a lecturer, writer, photographer and curator with a particular interest in the relations between art and political issues. His research and teaching is in areas of modern and contemporary art, including the globalisation of art and the biennial scene, the history of photography and new media art. Most recently, he has been working on documentary photography, film and video, especially in the depiction of war.
