Artist: ADDIS GEZEHAGN Booth W10 | West Wing 4-7 October 2018 Somerset House, Strand, London
Two more days until the end of the 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair. Come and visit booth W 10 this weekend where we are pleased to present Addis Gezehagn’s solo show Floating Cites.
As the leading international art fair dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora in Europe, 2018 marks the sixth edition of 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair.
Addis Gezehagn (b.1978), a long-time artistic presence in Addis Ababa, is known for portraying the multifaceted characteristics of the city’s residents by detailing the external facades of their homes. The six works on view from the artists series Floating Cities were produced especially for this edition of the fair. By examining the personal and public spaces Gezehagn’s artworks archive walls and towers destined to crumble: tracing a pattern of classism and social injustice. He urges us to think beyond homes as functional entities and offer commentary on the socio-economic context of urban life. Gezehagn is a 2011 graduate of Addis Ababa University’s Alle School of Fine Art.
