Plaid, DJ Tennis, Ariwo, Soundspecies: Afro-Cuban Collaborations at the Barbican

Friday, May 26 at 7:30 PM – 11 PM

One year on from the groundbreaking Manana // Cuba Festival in Santiago de Cuba – a project that brought together pioneering electronic artists with traditional Afro-Cuban musicians – four of the most inspiring collaborations come to the UK for the first time.

Eastern-Cuban folkloric masters, Obbatuké, showcase their original collaborations with Plaid and Soundspecies, while crafting a world premiere performance alongside Dj Tennis and trumpet virtuoso, Yelfris Valdes. They will be joined by Cuban/Iranian breakthrough act, Ariwo, who focus on the rich intersection between electronic and Afro-Cuban music. Support comes from MC, poet and Manana co-founder, Alayo and the roots flavours of Racubah Sound System.

Manana // Cuba is a festival and record label that connects the electronic music community to masters of Afro-Cuban folkloric tradition. The project is built around the belief that Cuba’s powerful blend of rhythm and culture will enrich the electronic music community, while giving local musicians a platform to connect with international audiences, incorporate technology and take their musical development in new directions.
