In this new body of work, the artist explores resonance as an intimate and existential experience. Drawing on his in-between cultural existence between Morocco and Germany, Nabil El Makhloufi transforms figurative language into a highly subtle painting practice, oscillating between figuration and abstraction. His suspended crowds, unfinished fragments, and evocations of water reflect humanity’s quest for meaning, revealing fragility and depth, silence and tension.

Nabil El Makhloufi was born in 1973 in Fez, Morocco. A graduate of the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, Nabil El Makhloufi has developed a distinctive approach where figuration—blending realism and symbolism—remains central. In his paintings, fragmented time and space impose a suspended moment on the viewer. His isolated figures, marked by striking expressiveness, convey doubt, estrangement, and interiority. Through them, the artist questions belonging, collective identities, and the place of the individual within the group. His work also reflects on the Arab world and its contemporary challenges. Finally, his experience of living abroad feeds a profound exploration of migration, rooted in both present realities and long-standing historical dynamics.

Nabil El Makhloufi’s works are included in major public and private collections, among them the Sharjah Art Foundation (United Arab Emirates), the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (Morocco), the Norval Foundation (South Africa), Société Générale (France), Saham Bank (Morocco), and the B.A.T CampusGalerie Collection (Germany).

Nabil El Makhloufi lives and works in Leipzig, Germany.
