Alt Africa would love to shout loud about a truly special London production that embodies creativity, diversity, and grassroots brilliance. From 18 to 28 June, ‘Rockets and Blue Lights’ by acclaimed playwright Winsome Pinnock will be lighting up the stage at Tower Theatre in Stoke Newington. Staged by a passionate amateur theatre company run entirely by volunteers — and registered as a charity — this production will prove, yet again, that professional-quality theatre doesn’t need West End budgets, or ticket prices (just £14!).

The engaging play explores Britain’s historical role in the transatlantic slave trade through a moving, time-shifting narrative that’s both poetic and powerful. Tower Theatre’s commitment to accessibility, representation, and artistic excellence makes this a story worth sharing — and celebrating.

It’s bold. It’s beautiful. And it’s all built on heart. It’s produced and directed by Landé Belo, winner of the ‘Best Producer 2024, Black British Theatre Awards’. She is ambitiously staging it ‘in the round’, which will be a feast for the eyes, ears and all the senses, when you realise that the play spans two eras, many scenes, all kinds of action and props!
