Group show: Maheder Haileselassie, Yassmin Forte, Senzeni Marasela, Tshepiso Moropa
Presenting four exciting female African artists from South African, Ethiopia and Mozambique. Each artist is engaged with telling stories of Africa and Africans told by Africans.
Themes in the work are myth, migration, family, folklore, memory geography and history (real and imagined) and the work includes photography, collage, textile and a short form moving image / animation.

Senzeni Marasela is one of Africa’s most significant female artists working today, known for her ongoing, narrative, project Waiting For Gebane, which she began in 2003. We will be showing early photographic work (not exhibited for many years) alongside more recent textiles.
Marasela describes her large scale works as “monuments” to the woman at the centre of Waiting for Gebane, and, by extension, other black women. She is interested in stories that remain unheard and untold of women who came before her and who will come after.
Maheder Haileselassie was one of five artists to win the CAP (Contemporary African Photography) prize in 2023. She has also been shortlisted for Grand Prix Images Vevey 2023/24 and a Phmuseum grant. Maheder works at the intersection of photography, history, anthropology and architecture.
We are showing images from Between Yesterday And Tomorrow, a series of landscape images and portraits inspired by the history books owned by her father. Maheder has superimposed 19th archives with her current photography and family albums.

Yassmin Forte was also a winner of CAP in 2023. We will show photographs from her series: This Is A Story About My Family. In this body of work she addresses her family, migration, colonization and the repetition of patterns of history.
She uses collage (archival images and her own new work) to create layers of the past and present, maps connecting her family’s history with the landscapes and history of Mocambique.
Tshepiso Moropa is a self-taught collage artist whose work weaves threads of history, symbolism and imagination. She creates hand-crafted collages and short animated films from archival imagery and her own photography, exploring the past and present tense of black people, the African diaspora and historical archives. The moving image works are translations of African folklore tales.

“One of my favourite things is spotting daily occurrences in the Accra scene, through music and colours of individual clothing or styles of dress. I get to see different types of African style, fashion in different colours and rare accessories worn by diverse individuals which excites me to document or create them.
” Yeboah’s work is shot from varying angles in order to keep his viewers in suspense: “it’s a way of disturbing the comfortable and comforting the disturbed.” His work reflects people, community, social life, religion and the freedom of youth. Up Gallery: Continuing her exploration of “scapes,” the artist will unveil new works at this year’s fair. Drawing inspiration from literature, particularly The Tales of Two Cities and Zhuang Zhou’s Butterfly Dream, she will delve into these new themes in her upcoming creations.

Through the traverse and collision of various psychological and physical experiences in life with the things in contact in the moment, she catalyzes a series of creations in search for “dialogues,” producing poetic scenes where everything is connected.
Hence, while it is as if she produces visual art in diverse forms, ranging from spatial installation to paper sculpture, drawing, photography, video installation, botanical sculpture, etc., Liu roams in the midst of and connects them as one.

Galerie Binome / Magnin-A, Paris, France Solo show: Lee Shulman & Omar Victor Diop

From the encounter between Lee Shulman / The Anonymous Project and Omar Victor Diop was born “Being There” series, at the crossroads of the two artists’ universes.

As a specialist of self-portraits, the Senegalese photographer introduces himself into the vernacular slide images of The Anonymous Project collection. Work of staging and re-assembling of the images orchestrated by Shulman, the series revisits in about sixty works the archetypes of the Trente Glorieuses society. These augmented pictures question the foundations of our contemporary society. By repairing absence, “Being There” opens a conversation on our history.
