Elba Teams Up With Salonean
Global screen icon Idris Elba has always been candid about his love for Sierra Leone, his ancestral home. Now, Elba is teaming up with global partners to develop Sherbro Island, regenerating it into an eco-friendly ‘smart city’ centred around African traditions and values, and providing jobs and opportunities for the local community of around 30,000 inhabitants.
In partnership with friend and fellow proud Salonean, Siaka Stevens (the grandson of the former Sierra Leonean president of the same name), big plans are afoot for Sherbro, to include a wind and solar farm developed by Octopus Energy Generation – providing electricity to an island which currently has no mains power. The Sherbro Island Alliance, formed in 2019, has formed a number of other partnerships with leading companies such as Lloyds, Sasaki Associates and Foster & Partners. Whilst no set timeline has yet been shared with the public, initial stages of development are expected to begin later this year. We look forward to updating you further on the project, which looks to be a momentous milestone for Sierra Leone.
